How to Use ChatGPT for Interview Prep (and When It Falls Short)
Prompts that help you draft stories and questions from a job posting - plus the failure modes generic chat tools cannot score.
ChatGPT is a decent first draft for interview prep. It is a weak interviewer. It will invent questions that sound smart and never show up in your loop, then praise answers that would get a polite nod and a no.
Use it to extract and outline. Use a JD-grounded mock when you need a score. PrepPilot's Mock Interview Prep exists for that second job.
By the numbers: OpenAI's own product notes that ChatGPT can be wrong or overly agreeable - that matters when you are practicing answers a hiring manager will push on.

What ChatGPT is good for
| Task | Why a chat window is enough |
|---|---|
| Turn a JD into themes | Fast skim of must-haves |
| Draft STAR bullets | You still have to add real numbers |
| List likely question types | Starting syllabus, not the real list |
| Tighten a rambling story | Editing help |
| First pass on "why this role" | You must add one company-specific fact |
Paste the actual posting and, if you are comfortable with it, relevant resume bullets. Vague prompts produce vague prep.
Six prompts that do real work
Replace the brackets. Keep your own numbers. If the model invents a metric, delete it.
1. Themes from the posting
Here is a job description. List must-have skills, nice-to-haves, and the 5 behaviors they will probe in interviews. Flag anything that looks like a seniority mismatch. Do not invent requirements that are not in the text.
[paste JD]
2. Question syllabus
Using only this job description, write 10 interview questions a hiring manager would actually ask. Label each behavioral, technical, or motivation. No trick brainteasers.
[paste JD]
3. STAR outline (not a speech)
Turn this resume bullet into a STAR outline with short bullets, not a paragraph I would memorize. If a number is missing, leave a [NEED METRIC] placeholder. Do not fabricate results.
[paste bullet]
4. Weakness check
I want to use this weakness in an interview for this role. Tell me if it conflicts with a must-have. Suggest a tighter 45-second structure: name, cost, fix.
Weakness: [habit] JD: [paste]
5. Pressure follow-ups
I will say this answer. Give me 5 follow-up questions a skeptical hiring manager would ask. Do not compliment the answer.
Answer: [your story]
6. Questions to ask them
Write 6 questions I can ask the interviewer that prove I read this posting. No "what's the culture like."
[paste JD]
After prompt 2, compare the list with Interview Question Predictor. After prompt 3, move the outline into STAR Story Builder so you are not copying a chatbot's voice into the room.
Where chat tools fail
| Failure | What happens in a real loop |
|---|---|
| Generic questions | Your JD said SSO and on-call; the bot asked "leadership style" |
| Fake praise | "Great answer!" after you used "we" for 90 seconds |
| Invented metrics | You repeat a number you cannot defend |
| No timing | Your story is 4 minutes; they wanted 90 seconds |
| No resume grounding | Advice ignores what you actually shipped |
| One-way video ignored | HireVue timers are not a chat box |
ChatGPT cannot hear you ramble. It cannot see you look at your own video tile. It will not stop you at 90 seconds.
A better 2-hour block
| Time | Tool | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 15 min | Prompt 1 + JD decoder | Must-haves |
| 20 min | Prompt 2 + question predictor | Real syllabus |
| 40 min | Prompts 3–5 + STAR builder | Five story outlines |
| 45 min | Mock Interview Prep | Scored answers on this JD |
If the round is tomorrow, follow Interview Prep in 24 Hours and use ChatGPT only for the outline step.
Privacy and honesty
- Strip employer names and customer data you should not paste into a consumer chat
- Do not read a live-interview "copilot" on a second screen. Plenty of companies treat that as cheating, and it shows
- You still have to say the story in your voice. If it sounds like a LinkedIn ghostwriter, rewrite it

Bottom line
Let the chatbot outline. Make yourself practice against the posting. If the tool only compliments you, it is not prep.
