How to Tailor a Resume to a Job Description in 20 Minutes
A repeatable edit pass - summary, top bullets, and skills - so the posting and your resume tell the same story without rewriting your career.
Sending the same resume to every posting is how you collect silence. Tailoring is not rewriting your career. It is picking the summary, the top four bullets, and the skills line so they match this job, in language you can defend in an interview.

What to change (and what to leave alone)

You should finish in 20 minutes once you have a master resume. If it takes an hour, your master file is too messy.
20-minute workflow
Minutes 0–5: Decode the posting
Paste the JD into Job Description Decoder or highlight by hand:
- 5–8 must-haves (tools, domain, scope)
- 2–3 verbs they repeat (partnered, shipped, owned, reduced)
- Level clues (IC vs lead, "manage" vs "execute")

Minutes 5–8: Score the current resume
Run Resume Fit Checker with the same posting. You want the gap list, not a vanity score.
For each gap:

Minutes 8–16: Rewrite the high-skim zone
Recruiters read the top third first. Spend the minutes there.
Summary (2–3 lines): role + domain + 1 proof point that matches this posting.
Before: "Results-driven professional seeking new opportunities in a fast-paced environment."
After: "Product analyst for B2B onboarding. Cut time-to-value from 21 to 14 days on mid-market accounts. Looking at roles that own activation experiments end to end."
Bullets: verb + work + number. Same formula as How to Write Resume Bullets. Use Resume Bullet Rewriter if a line is still duty-shaped.
JD must-have: "Partner with product and engineering to reduce time-to-value."
Before: "Cross-functional collaboration on customer projects."
After: "Partnered with product and eng on 3 activation fixes; cut enterprise time-to-value from 21 to 14 days."
Minutes 16–20: Keywords, then stop
Run ATS Keywords Extractor on the posting. Add terms you can discuss. Spell out acronyms once: "Amazon Web Services (AWS)."
Do not paste the requirements section into your skills list. Modern parsers and humans both notice stuffing. See Resume Keywords for ATS.
Save a dated copy (Company-Role-2026-08.pdf) so you know which version you sent.
Example: 20-minute pass on a CSM posting
Posting cares about: mid-market churn, onboarding, Salesforce, QBR cadence.

You did not rebuild the resume. You made the skim match the req.
When 20 minutes is not enough
- Your bullets have no numbers anywhere. Roast first: What a Resume Roast Catches.
- You are changing careers. You need a bridge paragraph, not a keyword swap. See Career Change Interview Guide.
- The posting is a stretch on level. Tailoring will not hide a 2-year vs 8-year gap.

Bottom line
Change the top of the resume, in their language, with proof you can say out loud. If the gaps need fiction, pass on the job and keep the 20 minutes.
